Emil Adam has been studying at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne since 2018 and is a freelance multimedia artist. He lives and works in Cologne. His main medium is children’s toys, which he transforms into sculptures, installations and photographs.
Some of Adam’s sculptures are interactive, ranging from small formats to larger-than-life dimensions, always with a focus on playfulness, rich detail and opulence. In his artistic work, Adam places particular value on giving the resources he uses a sustainable second life, sourcing them second-hand from flea markets, house clearances and various online platforms. He transforms collectible figures, soft toys and jewellery into new sculptures and assemblages that resemble coral reefs or alien planets.
His materials (toys, plastic and neon light) stand in contrast to a traditional notion of art and reflect the zeitgeist of our society as well as pop culture.
